The Warsaw Pact

  • The Warsaw Pact was created as a direct response to the remilitarisation of West Germany in addition to its recent membership in NATO
  • In May 14, 8 communist countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, USSR) grouped their militaries under one central command
  • The Pact stated that if one or more countries were attacked, self-defense of the country's own military or the collective military would be used, even with the use of force
  • Advantage that USSR was able to organise the militaries better
  • The USSR dominated the command of the collective military
  • Commander-in-Chiefs were all Soviet, headquartered in Moscow
  • Deputy Commander in Chief, Chief of the Joint, and the Commander-in-Chiefs of all three branches of the armed forces were Soviet as well
  • Therefore, military were strengthened and the USSR kept the other countries in the Soviet bloc in control
